WATCH: How Prost returned from the sidelines to make a title-winning comeback
Share
Alain Prost had already firmly etched his name into the Formula 1 history books by the end of the 1980s, having achieved three world championships. His fourth and final title victory, however, came after what had been a difficult start to the 1990s and provided a memorable end to his F1 career.
F1 TV documentary Greatest Comebacks: Alain Prost gives a fascinating inside look at Prost’s return to the top, as told by those who were there. After his relationship with Ferrari deteriorated in 1991 and left him without a seat for the following year, Prost joined Williams for the 1993 campaign.
Broadcaster Ben Edwards reflects on the challenges that returning drivers can face and how Prost disproved any doubters upon his comeback, though Williams co-founder Patrick Head explains why the world champion still had things to learn.
It was to be an eventful year for Prost. Despite the FW15C being a strong car, beating the competition – including the likes of Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher – was not a straightforward task, and Head details why he was left fearing for Williams’ prospects early in the season.

He also gives an insight into what made Prost the “hardest-working driver” he had worked with. Former race engineer David Brown, meanwhile, recalls the one occasion where the usually calm Prost became “highly stressed”.
The documentary reveals how Prost bounced back from trailing in the championship to embark on a devastating winning streak before the Frenchman ultimately claimed the title, having already announced his decision to leave the sport at the end of the year.
